My first lesson in perspective
An experimental mixed-media comic about a drawing tip from my dad — my first lesson in perspective
When I was about five years old, a lazy Sunday afternoon, I was reading Goscinny and Uderzo’s Asterix the Gaul. I noted that when Asterix punched a Roman soldier (with magic potion super-strength), the soldier not just disappeared from the top of the frame, he also left behind his sandles and a few teeth.
This blew my mind.
So, I trotted to where my dad was chilling. He was doing what he loved the most in the world: perusing periodicals with a cup of tea.
“Dad!” I said. “Can you teach me to draw?”
My dad (who had a then British Prime Minister John Major look going on back then) said:
“Of course. Drawing is super easy. Get me some pen-paper, please.”
I quickly ran to get him some pen and paper.
